White metal roofing saves energy costs

Aging commercial metal roofing begin to leak and to rust. This page quickly illustrates the principal steps in stopping leaks, containing rust and presenting the customer with an energy-saving white metal roof After finishing the project, the building interior was cooler during the warm summer months.

In a private hanger facility, the plane owners expect to house their beauties in a building free of leaks. Plus the hanger lacks air conditioning. During the hot days, the coolest possible roofing would be desirable.

After pressure washing the entire roof, the crew applies primer. In this instance the primer is Andek's Polaprime 21.After a full day to cure, the roof is inspected for breaks and other imperfections. This Polaprime 21 exhibits two other advantages besides retarding rust: acrylic adheres better and the metal is reinforced. There is a difference felt as one walks the roof.

Vertical Seaming Completed....Horizontal Seaming next

On this roof, more than 40 breaks in the panel surface were repaired. Vertical seaming consists of a base coat of Andek's Polaroof AC, then mesh embedded into the base coat, contouring the mesh (a stitchbond polyester) to the roof profile. The mesh then receives another coat

After the vertical seams, the horizontal seams are next. This seaming follows the contour of the metal panel. Mesh needs to be applied loose to adjust to the curing acrylic, yet stretched enough to avoid "fishmouths".

Two acrylic coatings are applied to the roof. In most cases, the coatings are applied by brush, not sprayed. It is true that the sprayed acrylic goes down faster, but our experience has taught us that spraying invites customer concern. The concern is that the building owner's customers--such as plane owners--express considerable concern about overspray. So we brush.

The top coat is a newly formulated acrylic designed to maintain the white luster longer. Andek calls this version "XTRA WHITE".Amazingly, this version of white acrylic is cool to the touch, even on 90+ days.
