To repair metal shingles, the porch is usually the most challenging. The shingles themselves tend to be more fragile compared to other roofing systems. And the porch area tends to be the most trampled at an embossed tin roof home. Understandably, painters have placed ladders on the shingles. Or children have played on them. Whatever the reason, damaged porch tin shingles is a common occurrence.
Deciding on a plan for the porch involves several considerations. For example, just below the owner faced a real dilemma. The enclosed porch roof area leaked into her living room. The local historical society flatly rejected any plan to replace the roof unless the same metal shingles were used. Her budget could not afford to replace with new shingles at this point.
In this situation, the owner had to balance her priorities between satisfactory appearance, performance and budget. Her strategy was to opt for 1) stopping the leakage into her living room and 2) avoiding a conflict with the local historical society. To accomplish this decision, we applied the fully reinforced system with restoration green acrylic. This system consists of four layers of acrylic with mesh between two of the acrylic layers.
To apply a fully reinforced system to embossed tin shingles, this project is the least attractive job we have ever performed. But for this situation at that particular time, the approach made sense. From the driveway, the porch roof surface looks presentable. Since the back door is the main entrance, the appearance issue seemed resolved for the roof surface. Incidently, the leakage situation was solved
Her gutters remained the most distracting feature. Because of the existing gutters, we were limited on installing capping properly. The capping we did installed improved the lines on the front of the residence. At a future time, new shingles and gutters could be installed. Meanwhile, the owner had restored her home within her budget with most of the attractive steps taken.

Standing seam porch roof with tin shingle house
In projects to repair metal shingles, the porch roofs have often been replaced at least once. The use of the standing seam panels has been a popular choice for a porch roof. The reasons are obvious: Both standing seam and shingles are metal styles of roofing. Also, with the traditional standing seam panels, the metal shingles compliment each other quite attractively. The corrugated style of metal roofing is not as attractive. In the example below, the decision to fully reinforce the standing seam metal roof was almost an afterthought. Initially, the owners had decided to replace the old panels, but the cost of adding this work to the project was reasonable.
Note on photos: On the day I traveled 13 hours (with the last six miles down a dirt road) for the initial visit, the weather suddenly turned sour. There was even hail. My "before" photos are merely shades of grey. Also, the second time I drove same trip, the painters had been working, leaving unwelcome paint chips over the new porch application. When the crew returned for their last visit, coating shed roofs, adding capping and a final coating of the porch concluded the project
As an aside, I was unaware of another example of my crew chief's resourcefulness: We had planned to access the well for pressure washing. The well water dribble out the hose. Not deterred, Lester purchased some 55 gallon drums, drove to who-knows-where to fill up and continued working. Another roadblock resolved.
Other porch surface suggestions
A few other observations are in order: If you have asphalt shingles on the porch and visible tin shingles on other roofs, the cheapest approach may be to coat the porch asphalt shingles with the same acrylic tint as the rest of the metal tin shingles.
If you cannot match old and new metal shingles exactly, coating all metal shingles with the same tint will usually work. Appearances improve more if the roofs are separated from each other. See this church where old and new were combined.
If a non-metal shingle roof is to be installed, then a smooth rolled roofing style coated with the roof color, or an accent tint, might be a smart choice. One of my customers did exactly that for a standing seam metal roof: Porch roof tint accents stone residence
