Painting tin roofs in Pennsylvania

Paint a tin roof in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania

Painting tin roofs in Pennsylvania probably means restoring metal roofing somewhere near an historical locale.  The above project is located near Valley Forge, the winter home of the Continental Army during the British invasion of the area.

The owners grew tired of the paint flaking and rust breaking through. Two years after our initial conversation, we performed a Preservation Application on this project .  This means we cleaned off the roof with a pressure washer, then applied primer and two coats of acrylic.

Steps in tin roof painting

A project to paint a tin roof follows certain steps:  First step is to clean off the loose debris to improve adhesion of primer and acrylic to the metal panels.  The crew uses a strong pressure washer to clean off the corrugated panels..

The crew cleaned off any loosed chips, using clorox to eliminate the growth of moss. An important step is the application of primer. In this project, we applied both colors-grey and red--of Polaprime 21 from Andek Company.  The profile of old coatings are quite easily seen through the primer.

The rusty red acrylic possess a more matted appearance compared to the shiny primer. After two coats, many of the roofs' imperfections disappear.  Around the chimney and a few other areas we performed a flashing repair.

After several visits to allow the acrylic to dry and cure, the metal panels are finished. A recent addition to the residence received a simple coating of acrylic to tie into the look of the old roofing panels.

The owners speculated that their growing family may mean a move in the future.  With the decision to proceed with a modified preservation application, they received a good alternative:  First, the roof's appearance improved dramatically, with the rust retarded.  When the time to sell arrives, they will have improved their position in the market.

Every project we have performed has had its own special story. Perhaps owners of these historical treasures take the time and care to preserve these legacy of our past.  These residences have to function as a home.  Painting tin roofs becomes integrated into the life of the structure.
