Colored metal roofs: a shiny finish

Sometimes a shiny finish is preferred

A colored metal roof usually has a matted finish. But not always. On rare occasions, an owner prefers a finish with a sheen. Here are three examples and the reasons for a glossy selection.

Restoration green with a sheen

On this central New Jersey home, the owners decided they would prefer a finish with a sheen. For several years they agonized over the tint they both wanted. When they were thinking of a glossy look, they were fortunate in that their standing seam panels were in good shape. Their good maintenance over the years meant a reasonably smooth metal surface. They both were aware a shiny surface magnifies any blemishes in the panels, whereas a matted look tends to mute eye-catching imperfections.

Due to the good condition of the roof panels, the project called for the minimal steps:

First, clean and prime
Second, coat roof twice with Restoration Green acrylic from Andek Corporation
Third, cover the acrylic with Andek's clearcoat

Americana red roof

This colored metal roof illustrates the level of work for standing seam tin roofs with a rough surface. The new owners discovered that the panels had been painted with cheap aluminum coating. Their vision of their color scheme was an Americana red, white and blue theme. With their large shady lot, the bright red and blue colors were framed quite attractively

Unlike the green roof above, this project required more steps to achieve a smooth bright finish:

After cleaning the roof, Polaprime 21 is used with mesh to create a smooth foundation. Then a special formulation of tinted Polaroof NW from Andek is coated onto the foundation. The result is an attrative surface that is entitled to a ten year warranty against leakage.
